For the week of May 15, 2017
Important News and Information:
~Hope all our special moms enjoyed a wonderful Mother's Day!
We have a super exciting week coming up in first grade.....our chicks should be hatching this week!! I'm sure you will hear all about it!
~Friday (5/19) - 11:00am Dismissal
~We will be going on a field trip to Queens County Farm on Wednesday, May 31st. Permission slips went home last Monday and were due back on the 12th. We are still missing a few. Please send them in as soon as possible. Thank you!
~Book Reports - When reading journals were checked for April, directions for a book report for May were stapled in the journal. For the month of May, please continue reading each night and recording books as you have done each month. However, instead of a reading response in the journal for this month, the children are being asked to complete a book report. There are 3 choices to choose from. Book reports are due Tuesday, May 30th. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
~VIP Day - The first grade will be hosting a VIP Day on Thursday, June 8th at 1:15pm. Please send back your form with your VIP name as soon as possible so we can make invitations this week. Thank you!
-Spelling: We will continue using the April/May spelling menu this week.
-Math: Homework this week are pages out of the Practice Workbook and worksheets.
-Reading Journal: Please be sure to check the reading journal. When journals were checked for April, I stapled in the assignment for May which is different than the previous months. Continue to read each night and record your books.
Our Work for the Week:
ELA: This week we will be reading a realistic fiction story called "The Dot". We will discuss comparing and contrasting. We will also learn about facts and opinions.
SPELLING WORDS: This week's words are:
their, friend, shouted, started, turned, thinking, watching, study, party, baby
*There will be a spelling test on Friday.
PHONICS: We will explore words with the endings -ed and -ing and the long e sound made with the letter -y.
GRAMMAR: We will continue to practice using contractions this week.
MATH: We will finish up Chapter 9 this week. We have explored measurement (shortest/longest and measuring with non-standard items) and telling time to the hour. This week we will practice a little more with telling time to the half hour. We will have a test on Chapter 9 on Thursday.
It's very important to keep reviewing basic addition and subtraction facts on a daily basis at home. You can use games on apps and websites as well as flashcards. It's helpful to give reminders to use all of the strategies we've learned...doubles, doubles +1, friends of ten. We will continue taking our "fast fact" quizzes this week.
**Please note that if during the day we use pages out of our Big Math Book in class, I will send those pages home in the red take home folder so you can see how the lesson was taught during the day. It is my hope that, if needed, this will help you be able to assist your child with the homework that night.
SCIENCE: We will continue with our unit on life cycles. It has been so exciting learning about the life cycle of the chick and having the hands on experience of having the chick eggs in our classroom. We have recorded changes in our observation journals each day. We have learned so much these past three weeks and are super excited for our chicks to hatch this week!
RELIGION: We will continue learning about Mary and the different ways we can honor her during the month of May. We will also learn about Jesus as the Good Shepherd.
**As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
