the Smith family
~ All about Señora Smith ~
I have been a teacher for 20 years and my specialty areas include languages (both English and Spanish). I hold a BA from Catholic University with a focus on English and Spanish, and an MS in Education from St. John’s University with a focus on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). I am presently finishing my course work at Fordham University for an MS in Education with a focus on Administration and Supervision. My NYS Permanent Certification includes English in grades 7-12 with a Professional Certification in TESOL.
Over the past 20 years, I have been lucky enough to have taught:
- 1st and 6th grade for 2 years in the South Bronx and Washington Heights through the Teach For America program
- 9th-12th grade English at Bishop Ireton HS in Alexandria, VA
- 9th-12th grade Spanish at St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip, NY
- I currently teach:
- Adult Education ESL at the Long Beach Adult Learning Center
- Pre-K – 8th grade Spanish at LBCRS
I have countless favorite memories from my teaching career. At LBCRS I love when students present the projects that they have worked on – especially video projects. I also love when we work with iPads and my students become incredibly enthusiastic and excited about learning Spanish. The Frost Valley trip was a great highlight for me last year and my students’ involvement in my annual mission trip to Peru has been nothing short of inspiring.
When I am not teaching, I love spending time with my family, running the boardwalk, swimming (especially ocean swimming), competing in triathlons, working as a co-host on Telecare TV (this year I will be a news anchor on a show called Everyday Faith Live), and traveling (especially to Peru!).
Teaching the children at LBCRS is a true gift and blessing in my life and brings me great joy. Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with me each day.
