The First Grade program at Long Beach Catholic recognizes the unique needs of each student, and provides many individual, small group, and whole class learning opportunities.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS:
The Language Arts curriculum combines reading, writing, listening, speaking, and spelling skills. Our Language Arts program incorporates the Fundations reading program which provides children with strong phonic skills. Non-fiction text, fairy tales, folk tales, and poetry help give each child a balanced reading program.
MATH:
The First Grade Math program is based on the Into Math curriculum. Technology and hands-on learning are strong components of our daily lessons. There is a big emphasis on developing a strong number sense, as well as fact flunecy through practice of addition and subtraction strategies.
RELIGION:
The children learn that God loves them and that they are special. Learning about the church year, feast days, prayers, liturgy, and family life is a special part of our curriculum. The first graders have the honor of sharing the story of Jesus' birth when they present their Christmas Pageant in December.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Our students begin to develop a sense of time and place as they encounter classic tales, and learn and practice map skills. Multicultural awareness is explored through community connections and a developing sense of good citizenship.
SCIENCE:
Students engage in observations of the natural world, express themselves through painting and crafts, and conduct inquiries into topics related to their healthy development.
"When you walk into LBCRS you can feel the warmth, commitment and enthusiasm radiating from the teachers, administrators and staff. They are dedicated to helping my children grow academically, socially and spiritually. It is home away from home." - Amy Sibley, Parent
